U.S. Documentary Filmmaker Repeatedly Detained at Border

But the case of Laura Poitras, an Oscar-and Emmy-nominated filmmaker and intrepid journalist, is perhaps the most extreme. In 2004 and 2005, Poitras spent many months in Iraq filming a documentary that, as The New York Times put it in its review, “exposed the emotional toll of occupation on Iraqis and American soldiers alike.” The film, “My Country, My Country,” focused on a Sunni physician and 2005 candidate for the Iraqi Congress as he did things like protest the imprisonment of a 9-year-old boy by the U.S. military. At the time Poitras made this film, Iraqi Sunnis formed the core of the anti-American insurgency and she spent substantial time filming and reporting on the epicenter of that resistance. Poitras’ film was released in 2006 and nominated for the 2007 Academy Award for Best Documentary.

Unless you’ve had your head in the sand, you may have noticed a new trend emerging in casting all around the country and the globe!  Fueled by advances in available video technology, casting directors now seek out the best possible talent for their projects in markets far beyond the boundaries that restrained them in the past, AND they can accomplish this more efficiently than ever before.  Virtual auditions provide new opportunities for actors to access more projects than ever before and to BOOK in markets previously inaccessible.

When requesting that actors “go on tape”, agents and casting directors routinely share their unique expectations for lighting, sound, make-up, hair, movement, wardrobe, and more.

?         So what are casting directors asking for and how can we actors deliver quality video auditions?

?         What are the factors that contribute to success in this new frontier?

?         And . . . Why the heck are CDs and agents so picky about what we send them?

Competition for jobs is fierce. Submissions must somehow stand out from the hundreds of videos submitted for each and every role.  To help actors face this challenge, ProACT is offering this informationalseminar led by industry experts, including Sharon Garrison (actor/producer/videographer), Mary Jo Mazur (videographer), Wendy Pennington (actor/videographer/demo reel editor), and Deanna Rozenblum (makeup/hair specialist.)  Photographer and filmmaker, Steve Riley will also be there to answer questions about cameras, lighting, file sizes and any other technical questions – plus hints on setting up your own taping facility.

Bring your questions as well as your personal experiences to our panel, as we cover the nuts and bolts of successful video auditions, beginning with the basic tools of taping . . . through preparation . . . and finally submission via the Internet!  Join us as we embark on this new and exciting casting frontier!

Official Trailer:

Measurement and orientation break down in a dramatic, formally groundbreaking, landscape-obsessed road movie that chronicles a brief but intense romantic relationship between an American satellite-mapping engineer and an expatriate Armenian photographer who impulsively decide to travel together into uncharted territory – both literally and metaphorically.

HERE premiered at the 2011 Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals and has gone on to screen throughout the world.  A live installation version of the project, HERE [ THE STORY SLEEPS ], premiered at The Museum of Modern Art in 2010, travelled to Mass MoCA and was mounted at the 2011 Sundance and Houston Cinema Arts Festivals.

Selected Press:

Across the Universe: Braden King’s HERE – Davina Quinlivan, Sight and Sound:
“An assured fiction-feature debut, HERE is a bold endeavour to make a film inspired by a love of map-making and the mythology of exploration… The film fashions an atlas out of memory and emotion in a way that makes clear the connections between geographic exploration and cinema’s unique invitation to explore everything and everyone.

HERE: Love in the Time of Google Maps – Karina Longworth, LA Weekly / Village Voice

“King’s blending of naturalism and pure cinematic flourish, the startlingly direct romantic philosophy nestled within layers of enigmatic writing and visual obfuscation, packs an unexpectedly powerful emotional punch. It’s the road trip romance reinvented, remapped.”

Sundance Film Festival Review: HERE – Ray Greene, Box Office Magazine
“Braden King’s lyrical cinepoem HERE is one of those movies so fully achieved it restores your faith in the cinema.  An extended tone poem about a brief encounter between an American cartographer and an Armenian photographic artist, the film utilizes the surreal landscape of contemporary Armenia as a kind of undiscovered planet.”

Louisiana Film Prize Launches One of the Most

Lucrative Short Film Contests in the World

Louisiana Film Prize Website launches and registration begins
for “the coolest film contest on the planet.”

SHREVEPORT, LA – The slogan of the Louisiana Film Prize is simple: Shoot a film. Win $50,000. Representatives from the La Film Prize will be at the Texas Theatre,Tuesday, April 10th in the lobby at 7 p.m. to the pitch to the indie film community in Dallas. Introductions by Bart Weiss.

The Louisiana Film Prize Contest and Festival
invites filmmakers from all over the world to create and present a short film under one condition – it must be shot in the Shreveport-Bossier area. The winner will receive a grand prize of $50,000.

“This is the coolest film contest on the planet,” said Gregory Kallenberg, founder of the Louisiana Film Prize. “It has been created to energize the filmmaking community to create the best work they can in an environment that is incredibly supportive of their endeavors. We hope that the Louisiana Film Prize will help spark a revolution in indie filmmaking in the area.”
Filmmakers have five months, from Feb. 1st to July 9th, to produce their film. Each filmmaker will be provided with an ambassador and a team of volunteers, resources and aids to help them with production, housing, promotional events and other needs during their stay.

The top 20 films will be selected to promote and screen their film during the LA Film Prize Festival Weekend, October 12-14. The winner will be chosen based on the votes of a panel of expert judges from all over the country, as well as the vote of the festival audience. Finalists are encouraged to heavily promote their film and enlist support from friends, family and the public to heighten their chances of winning.

“This is a substantial prize that could really change a filmmaker’s life,” said Chris Lyon, the LAFP’s festival director. “This $50,000 could help someone create more short films or even help fund a feature film. It’s a really amazing opportunity for the filmmaker.”

Organizers hope the Louisiana Film Prize will further grow and transform Shreveport-Bossier’s creative community, alongside other existing efforts such as Moonbot Studios, Gorilla Design Studio, CoHab coworking, the Robinson Film Center and artspace.

“Ever since I returned to my hometown, I’ve wanted to find a way to help spur the ongoing evolution of our town into a creative mecca and give our city a national brand as a home to the creative class,” Kallenberg said. “As SXSW transformed Austin, the Louisiana Film Prize will do the same for our region.”
