Screen legend Angie Dickinson will attend the Texas Film Hall of Fame to accept the Star of Texas Award, given to an outstanding Texas film or television show, on behalf of the iconic Western set in Texas, RIO BRAVO.

Alongside Dickinson, RIO BRAVO stars John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson, telling the story of the town sheriff who enlists the help of some colorful characters to fight off a ruthless cattle baron. Playing a flirtatious gambler called “Feathers,” the film was Dickinson’s break out Hollywood role, helping her win a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year.

Angie Dickinson has had a long and distinctive career in both movies and television. With a career spanning over five decades, Dickinson has appeared in more than 50 films, including the original OCEAN’S ELEVEN, THE KILLERS, PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW, BIG BAD MAMA, PAY IT FORWARD, THE CHASE, POINT BLANK, and DRESSED TO KILL. One of the most prominent actresses of the 1960s, Dickinson shared the screen with some of the decade’s greatest leading men – Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Rock Hudson, Michael Caine, Kirk Douglas, Marlon Brando, and Robert Redford, to name a few. International acclaim came with the success of the 1970s television series Police Woman, the first hour-long show starring a successful woman, earning her three Emmy nominations and a second Golden Globe Award.

BBQ: A TEXAS LOVES STORY

Texas Independent Film Network  (TIFN) and Video Association of Dallas are proud to present a “BBQ and Beer” The Texas Theater,
March 3rd – 4:45 pm.  It will be a double feature for the month of March. In the tradition of Texas culture, TIFN will showcase two films that focus on two things that Texans have loved for decades- BBQ and Beer. First, TIFN will play BBQ: A TEXAS LOVES STORY and SOMETHIN’S BREWIN IN SHINER, a film directed by Mike Woolf.

Directed by Chris Elley and narrated by former Governor Ann Richards, BBQ: A TEXAS LOVES STORY takes viewers on a journey across the state to visit many of the different BBQ spots in Texas and the individuals behind them, from local pit masters, to a group
of University of Texas students that have formed their own BBQ club. In each city and town, Elley shows the best places for brisket and the undying enthusiasm that Texans have for BBQ.

SOMETHIN’S BREWIN IN SHINER follows the small town of Shiner, TX during the summer of 2003 as the Spoetzl Brewery was set to launch its next great beer. Filmmaker Mike Woolf captures the history of the town’s brewery as well as the small town culture. Speaking with everyone from the mayor to the fire chief, Woolf treats the audience to an often-humorous commentary on the importance of beer in Shiner, TX.

Diversity in Film

I am hooked on the columns in by  Peter Knegt in Indiwire, especially his recent post on the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations.  I was also flummoxed by how little criticism there was for The Descendants portrayal of Hawaii.  It is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the world, which you certainly could not tell by watching the film.

Encouraging news for the underrepresented film community, however, Boy by Taika Waititi  just made its kickstarter goal and is coming to the US

I saw this film at ImagiNATIVE and found it touching and inspiring.  It brought me back to childhood escapism in the most delightful way.

Also highly recommend in limited release Andrew McLean’s On the Ice, a film that has been described as a cross between The River’s Edge and The Fast Runner.  Read Rodger Ebert’s review, he agrees.

Campania In-Felix Screening at North Texas College Film Fest

Deep within the beautiful countryside of the Campania region of Italy there is a sickness that is destroying both the natural world and the people who need it to survive. Years of pumping waste and pollution into the air and ground has made the land dangerous. Ivanna Corsale’s documentary, Campania In-Felix (Unhappy Country), takes a deep and unflinching look at the root causes of problem; implicating the government’s role in the issue as much as the mafia’s. An excerpt from the documentary will screen as part of the annual North Texas College Film Fest on Tuesday, February 28. Doors will open at 6PM and the films will begin at 7PM. The event will take place at the Texas Theatre and includes new work from the major film schools in town: SMU, UNT, and UTA. Hope to see you there.
